LARB Artist Profile: Ed Wexler

Image: Ed Wexler by Ed Wexler

Today's breakdown of the Glenn Beck book canon by Laurie Winer is accompanied by a caricature illustration made especially for LARB by artist/illustrator Ed Wexler. Over the many years I've known and worked with Ed, he's continued to elicit wicked laughter with his confident caricatures. You can see the influence of his favorites David Levine, Al Hirschfield, Edward Sorel, Rick Meyerowitz, and Robert Grossman, but Ed is definitely his own man. The exaggerations that make up his sardonic style always have a subtle warmth for his subject, tell a deeper truth about being human.

Ed has also worked in animation, beginning with Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat). He currently works at the Walt Disney Company where he has served as part of a small creative problem-solving team (creatively) named Special Projects which provided Disney with animation of both its classic and current characters for television, the internet, and Disney theme parks. He has honed his expertise in series development, on-air corporate ID and promotions and cutting-edge desktop animation there, co-developing, designing and directing a variety of television pilots for the Disney Channel including Disney's Little Einsteins, which combined traditional and computer animation with live-action footage.

You've seen Ed's work as a regular contributor to publications such as U.S. News & World Report, and The Los Angeles Times. His work for The Hollywood Reporter’s special Emmy and Academy Awards issues have earned him a reputation as one of the best caricature artists working in print today.

Originally from New York and a graduate of The Cooper Union, Ed now lives in Los Angeles.
